ABOUT
The Pantry Society was created for the misfits, oddballs, and renegades who aren't satisfied with the status quo. The comic offers social commentary through eclectic pantry items, with the main character being an angry white kimchi named Hannie (pronounced, Hahn-E).
Hannie's anger takes center stage, but it's not without reason. Her name is a play on the Korean word “han”, which is often described as a uniquely Korean sense of deep sorrow, resentment, rage, and grief – rooted in Korea's history as a colonized country. Hannie's deep-rooted anger is fueled by injustice, being misunderstood, and feeling unseen in a world full of seemingly complacent individuals.
As Hannie navigates pantry life, she is accompanied by other characters including, Gummie, an overly optimistic gumball, Chip, an insecure potato chip and Boo, an arrogant, emotionally stunted ghost that was once a premium cheese. Ruling over them all is Mr. Porky Links, a money-hungry sausage who sees the pantry items only as tools for building his own kingdom.
Together, the personalities of the Pantry Society provide commentary on food hierarchies (mirroring real-world social status) and critique social norms. Through these flavorful characters, readers may recognize aspects of themselves and others, prompting reflection on our own roles in society.
